How do you refresh soapstone countertops?

Refresh soapstone by sanding light scratches and reapplying mineral oil. Most ‘tired’ looking soapstone just needs the surface evened out and reconditioned. Start with a clean, dry countertop. For visible scratches, rub gently with 220-grit sandpaper in a small circular motion until the mark fades, then wipe away the dust with a damp cloth. For dull patches, a Scotch-Brite pad works the same way without the grit. Once the surface is even, apply food-grade mineral oil with a clean rag. Let it sit five to ten minutes, then wipe off the excess. The stone should look noticeably darker and more uniform within a few minutes. For deep scratches that catch a fingernail, call a fabricator — that’s beyond DIY territory.
