Southeast Designer Showhouse — Art Deco Powder Room in Calacatta Antico Porcelain

This Southeast Designer Showhouse powder room is small, self-contained, and the room that became the conversation piece of the entire 11th annual Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles event. Designed by Renee Chiarelli of The Design Editors, the space pairs a bold abstract wallpaper and brass fixtures with a floating vanity in Calacatta Antico Porcelain — and a sculptural three-layer backsplash that became the design’s defining moment.

The breakthrough idea came from Tene on our team: stop thinking about the backsplash in two dimensions. The material is twelve millimeters thick. Add another layer, slightly smaller, mimicking the first. Focus on the vein flow. Specifications Designer Claudia Stimmel approved it on the spot, asked for a third layer, and called it “finally, a fabricator that is willing to get creative with me.” Materials supplied by Encore Stone Studio.

If this has you thinking about porcelain in your own bathroom, the Perfect Fit Countertop Quiz is a quick way to narrow down the right material.

Calacatta Antico porcelain layered backsplash and floating vanity in the Art Deco Powder Room designed by Renee Chiarelli, Southeast Designer Showhouse 2026

Why This Design Works

✅ Calacatta Antico’s warm gold veining reads as both classical and modern against the bold abstract wallpaper.

✅ A three-layer backsplash brings sculptural dimension to a 12mm material that is normally treated as flat.

✅ The floating vanity mirrors the room’s floating cabinet, lifting the entire space visually.

✅ Brass fixtures and amber accents warm the cool stone vein flow.

How to Recreate This Look

1️⃣ Choose a porcelain with strong vein flow — Calacatta Antico, Calacatta Extra, or Statuario all have the directional movement that lets a layered backsplash sing.

2️⃣ Layer your backsplash — a second porcelain piece slightly smaller than the first creates 3D dimension at almost no extra material cost.

3️⃣ Float the vanity to give a small powder room visual space. Pair with a floating shelf below if the design supports it.

4️⃣ Let the wallpaper carry the color — keep the stone as the cool counter-note. The contrast is the point.
